Chiropractic Adjustments

What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

Chiropractic joint manipulation – commonly referred to as adjusting – is used to release restricted joints of the spine and extremities. Chiropractic adjustments can also be made to correct abnormal movement patterns or failures to function.  A high velocity, low amplitude thrust is the typical motion used in applying the correct amount of pressure to the joint that needs the manipulation. These thrusts can be followed by an audible release, called a cavitation, that allows joint pressure to release.

Why would I need Chiropractic Adjustments?

Joints often become restricted due to improper posture and/or poor muscle activity. Once restricted, the body begins to develop compensatory patterns in order to achieve its normal ranges of motion.  If the joint remains restricted, the compensatory patterns continue and can eventually lead to complete lack of movement in the original joint. A restricted joint can cause nearby joints to become hypermobile, or move excessively.  Hypermobility can lead to degeneration and pain in the joints.  By applying  chiropractic adjustments to restricted segments, the joint regains motion that would be unattainable using only exercise or posture correction. Chiropractic adjustments are performed with the goal of reducing subluxation, the altered position of the vertebra and related function loss. Besides increased motion, adjusting also relieves pain and relaxes overactive muscles.  If patients prefer not to hear or feel a “popping” noise, our doctors have various options for mobilization, which can be just as effective.

Benefits

Chiropractic adjustments are not just for back pain. Chiropractic adjustments can improve function and range of motion in all areas of the body. Here are some conditions and areas of the body chiropractic care can help:

  • Headaches

  • Back and Neck Conditions

  • Leg, Knee, Foot, and Ankle Pain

  • Arm, Wrist, Shoulder, or Elbow Pain

  • Stress and Tension Disorders

  • Bursitis

  • Arthritis

  • Chronic Injuries

  • TMJ (jaw) Pain

Side Effects

Side effects are usually minimal. The most common reaction to a chiropractic adjustment is a mild soreness or aching, which doesn’t last very long. An ice pack will usually eliminate nearly all soreness or aching felt after the procedure.
